What is a Neutral Evaluation process?
A Neutral Evaluation process enables individuals to share their opinion and preferred outcomes confidentially and without any sense of confrontation.
This process offers a similar approach to mediation - in that neutrality of the facilitator is paramount, the process is informal, confidentiality is a key principle, the focus is not on blame, and nor is the process regarded as an investigation.
Neutral Evaluation incorporates individual confidential calls with every person relevant to the situation and then a report is presented to the organisation, with a summary of the core issues and recommendations for next steps to resolve the issues.
Neutral Evaluation or Workplace Mediation?
Neutral Evaluation may become the better option if more clarity is required before deciding on the required solution. It may also be clear that attempting to resolve the conflict through mediation would not be the best course of action for the individuals involved.
Workplace Mediation offers the exploration and resolution of issues through joint and separate conversations with individuals. Mediation is an excellent method of conflict resolution (and it may be one of the recommendations following a Neutral Evaluation process).
The Neutral Evaluation process provides the opportunity to discover and explore the issues, evaluate the findings, and report back recommendations to the organisation, by identifying the key themes rather than individuals. This is also an excellent alternative to mediation in situations where there are several individuals involved who share concerns or frustrations about one or two people in the organisation.
